LET’S HEAR IT FOR CALIFORNIA
Are you tired of the politics, the endless waves of refugees, and a government who thinks you are a cash cow? Where can you go? Belgium, Switzerland? How about the United States? New York City is too expensive and the winters are long and cold. Then there is Miami (you will need to spend your summers somewhere else because the heat there is stifling). So, why would you not look a little farther in California?
Everyone dreams of California. There is a reason it is called the Golden State with its beautiful beaches, its majestic landscapes, forests, mountains and, deserts. You will find anything you want in California. The American Way of Life is omnipresent, some of the best universities in the country are in California and the weather is always amazing. There are infinite possibilities for the courageous ones who want to start their own business.
If you make it, you will not be looked upon with envy and jealousy, and called names such as “rich jerk”. Rather you will be one of the ones who have reached the American Dream. California is much more than its gorgeous landscapes and wonderful weather. It is a way of life. However, if you need more reasons to decide if you want to live here or visit, then keep on reading.
Here are eight reasons why everyone wants to live in California:
In the big cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Barbara and San Diego, smaller communities have risen. We know we spend a lot of time in our cars so we do not want to go anywhere too far after we get home and we love going out in our local communities or other close neighborhoods
Californians love cultural activities, museums, galleries, open-air concerts, movies and shows, conventions and ethnic restaurants. Of course, it does not hurt that Disneyland, Universal Studios and Sea World are here too. Finally, let us not forget that Los Angeles still remains the capital of the entertainment industry.
Within a few minutes or hours, you can have access to miles of beaches or majestic landscapes such as mountains, deserts or, endless forests, but if you prefer, you can stay in your neighborhood or visit a different local and experience a different culture. This State has attracted immigrants from the entire world who have adapted in their own communities: Chinatown, Koreatown, Little Armenia, Little Tokyo, Olvera Street in Los Angeles.
California is an amalgam of cultures. If you work hard, your chances of succeeding will be the same whether you are Asian, Persian, European, Jew, Muslim, Christian or Buddhist.
Californians like to live a healthy lifestyle. They are not as fat as their neighbors in other States and they eat less junk food. They like to eat organic fruits and vegetables, they enjoy juicing, doing yoga and Pilates, working out in the many gyms or running on the beach or in the parks. In California, we take good care of our health and we do not mind paying for it. Californians also love going to coffee shops and restaurants and getting together with their friends.
California is also the birthplace of many corporations that have become giants in the world such as Apple, Google, Yahoo, Hewlett-Packard, Chevron, Uber, Facebook, Tesla, Fox, MGM, Disney, Virgin Galactic to name a few. It is not by chance that these companies have set up shop here. First, there is no VAT tax in the US, but California particularly offers an environment where it is easier to find qualified labor.
There are many reputable French schools here. If you wish to have your children continue their education in French, the Lycée International de Los Angeles has five campuses as well as the Lycée Français. These two schools are accreditated and offer dual immersion programs. Other public or private schools might offer dual immersion programs in French. However, if you want your child to go to a local school, it is important to do some prior research and find out what cities or areas you will want to move as schools inside the same school district can greatly differ. In this case, enrolling the help of a knowledgeable real estate agent will be very advantageous. Some of the best school districts are located in Beverly Hills, San Marino (Pasadena), Irvine and Laguna Beach (Orange County), and also many others in Northern California.
California’s government is environmentally aware. Cars and trucks here need to be equipped with special antismog filters. California has some of the most restrictive laws in the nation regarding gasoline. The cost is obviously higher but if you do not want to breathe polluted air while still driving your car, you need to make some sacrifices. Pollution in Los Angeles in the 70’s was a lot worse than it is now. The same goes with the smoking ban everywhere in the city, so if you like your cigarette, maybe now would be a good time to quit.
In conclusion, and to those who will tell me that life in California is more expensive, I will respond that my German car is a lot cheaper than if I bought it in Germany, mostly because I do not pay the VAT tax. The cost of medical insurance will be obviously higher than what you will pay in France because the United States does not have socialized medicine, unless of course you live under the poverty level. You will find however many different insurance plans depending on your needs. As far as real estate prices go, they will vary from city to city and even from community to community but I think the same goes in most cities in Europe. I do not think that crime and poverty are worse here. In fact, I have seen a lot less panhandlers in Los Angeles and San Francisco than in Paris and Geneva. Finally, Californians are courteous. They do not throw their trash out of the window of their cars (fines can be $100 or higher), pedestrians cross on the green and cars stop on the orange and at crosswalks.
Of course, nothing is always perfect in this world but California comes in pretty close.
Rien n’est parfait dans le monde, mais pour moi la Californie, c’est ce qu’il y a de plus proche de la perfection.
